WakeDraw

Troubleshooting Guide

Here's what to check and how to fix things, organized by symptom. Work through the steps from the top. If you're still stuck, see Before you contact us at the bottom and send us an email.

Most problems are solved by two things: fully closing and reopening the app, then restarting the device. To close the app, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause, then swipe the WakeDraw card up and away.

Downloading the wake-up kit (model)

The download won't start or seems stuck

Right after installation, WakeDraw downloads a wake-up kit (the AI model) of about 1.3 GB from Apple's servers. You can see progress on the Home card.

  1. Make sure you're connected to Wi‑Fi. On cellular, the app asks you to confirm before downloading.
  2. While it downloads, keep the device plugged in and on a stable Wi‑Fi connection. Keeping the app open lets you watch progress on the Home card.
  3. Temporarily turn off Low Power Mode and Low Data Mode (Settings > Battery, and Settings > Wi‑Fi > ⓘ next to your network).
  4. If you see Try Again on the Home card, tap it.
  5. If it's still stuck, fully close and reopen the app, restart the device, and try again.

Depending on your connection, the download can take anywhere from a few minutes to several tens of minutes.

"Not enough storage" / the download fails

On top of the roughly 1.3 GB kit, the device needs extra free space to unpack it. We recommend keeping at least 3 GB free.

  1. Check available space in Settings > General > iPhone (iPad) Storage.
  2. Remove apps you don't use, large videos, and message attachments. The recommendations iOS shows there can help too.
  3. Once you've freed space, tap Try Again on WakeDraw's Home screen.

See Apple's guide for how to check storage.

It asks whether to download over cellular

Because the kit is large, it may use a lot of mobile data on cellular or Low Data Mode, so the app asks first. If your plan has room, go ahead; otherwise tap Later and download on Wi‑Fi.

I already downloaded the kit, but it asks me to download again

iOS may have cleared the kit when storage ran low, or part of the kit may be damaged. The app blocks wake-ups if the safety filter isn't working properly and asks you to download the kit again. Just follow the prompt. The kit may also be downloaded again after an app update.

Waking up

The first wake-up takes a long time

The very first time, the device prepares the AI model for its own chip (the Neural Engine), which can add a minute or two. The progress screen tells you when this is happening. Please don't close the app while you wait. Once it's prepared, later wake-ups start right away.

After the kit is downloaded, spending a moment on the Home or drawing screen lets the app start preparing early, so by the time the drawing is done, it finishes faster.

I keep getting a "didn't work this time" message instead of a result

If the on-device safety filter decides a result might be scary or inappropriate, the app quietly tries up to two more times, then shows a gentle message if the result is still caught. This can happen even when nothing is wrong with the drawing — for example, if the AI happens to produce dark colors or spiky shapes.

  • Try a different look (for example, Storybook → Plush).
  • Pick the matching subject under What did you draw?
  • If large areas are filled in black, try mixing in other colors.

The result doesn't look like the drawing

  • Pick what you drew under What did you draw? Animals in particular keep their bodies and legs better when a subject is chosen.
  • Draw with thick, clear lines, and close off large areas with a line.
  • Draw eyes as small, filled-in dots.
  • Tap Wake Again to see another result. Up to 8 wake-ups of the same drawing count as one free drawing.
  • Sometimes the AI reads a drawing differently — for example, turning a side-view animal to face forward. Sending us examples like this helps us improve a lot.

The device gets hot or the battery drains fast

Waking up works the device's chip hard for a short time, so several wake-ups in a row can make the device warm.

  • Take a short break after a few wake-ups.
  • Avoid long sessions while charging, or using it in direct sun with a thick case.
  • If the device gets very hot, iOS may slow itself down, making wake-ups slower. Let it cool down and try again.

Bringing in paper drawings

It can't find the page, or the lines don't come through

  • Shoot in good light, without shadows falling across the page.
  • Keep all four corners of the page on screen, shooting from as straight above as you can.
  • Put the page on a background of a different color (a wooden table, a dark cloth) so the edges are easier to find.
  • Light pencil lines may not be picked up. Darker lines from crayons, markers, or colored pencils work better.
  • Lined or grid paper can have its lines picked up as part of the drawing. Plain white paper works best.
  • You can draw in any missing lines on the canvas after the preview.

The camera won't open

If you didn't allow camera access the first time, turn on Settings > Apps > WakeDraw > Camera. You can also skip the camera and use Choose from Photos to bring in a photo you took earlier (no permission needed).

Saving and sharing

Saving to Photos doesn't work

  1. Check that Settings > Apps > WakeDraw > Photos is set to "Add Photos Only" or "Full Access." If it's "None," the app can't save.
  2. Make sure the device has enough free storage.
  3. If saving fails, the app tells you, and the free-drawing count doesn't go down.

Saving a video takes a long time or fails

Videos are built frame by frame on the device, which can take from a few seconds to several tens of seconds. Please don't close the app while it's working. If it fails, check the Photos permission and storage, then try again.

Tapping Share doesn't open the share sheet

Sharing opens only after the grown-up check. Type the answer to the multiplication question as a number. If it's locked after three wrong answers, a new question appears after 30 seconds.

Purchases

The purchase screen shows no prices or says it "couldn't load"

  1. Check your internet connection and tap Try Again. Product details come from the App Store.
  2. Check that you're signed in to the App Store (Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases).
  3. If In-App Purchases are blocked in Screen Time, purchases can't go through. Check your Screen Time settings.

Restore doesn't work

  • Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple Account you used to buy. Your receipt email shows which account made the purchase.
  • If you use it through Family Sharing, check that the purchaser has Purchase Sharing turned on and that your account is also sharing.
  • Try again while connected to the internet, and restart the device.
  • If a Yearly plan was canceled and the period has ended, there's nothing to restore. Check its status in Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions.

If it still won't restore, see Apple's guide If you can't find or use your in-app purchases, and let us know too (just include the order ID from your receipt — never send card details).

Grown-up check and display

The grown-up check is locked

Three wrong answers in a row lock it for 30 seconds, then a new question appears. Questions are shown in the app's language; if that language is hard to read, change the app language (Settings > Apps > WakeDraw > Language).

The app freezes or closes by itself

  1. Fully close and reopen the app.
  2. Update WakeDraw to the latest version in the App Store, and make sure iOS is up to date.
  3. Close other apps and restart the device.
  4. If it keeps closing at the same step, tell us exactly what you tapped when it happened.

Text is too big or too small / I want to use VoiceOver

WakeDraw supports iOS Text Size (Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size), VoiceOver, and Reduce Motion. With Reduce Motion on, the sparkles and moving effects stop. If anything is cut off or isn't read aloud, please let us know.

Before you contact us

Send the following to support@dawonlabs.com and we can help faster:

  • Device model (for example, iPhone 17 or iPad Air) and iOS or iPadOS version (Settings > General > About)
  • WakeDraw version (you can find it in Settings > General > iPhone (iPad) Storage > WakeDraw)
  • What you did, what happened, and any message shown on screen
  • For purchase problems, the order ID from your Apple receipt (never send your card number or Apple Account password)

Please don't send your child's name, photos showing their face, or personal details like their school or address. If you send a result image, a screenshot showing just the drawing is enough. We use emails only to reply and delete them one year after we finish answering (Privacy Policy, section 6).
